Who am I?
Myriam Renaud

Myriam Renaud is the author of Constructing Moral Concepts of God in a Global Age, a book of constructive philosophical theology published by Routledge in 2023. She is currently working on a for-the-trade book on White Evangelicals in America. With William Schweiker, she co-edited and contributed to the essay collection Multi-Religious Perspectives on a Global Ethic: In Search of a Common Morality (Routledge, 2020), and with Joshua Daniel, she co-edited and contributed to the essay collection God and the Moral Life (Routledge, 2018). In addition, she has published research articles and book reviews in peer-reviewed academic journals.

Renaud is also an award-nominated journalist and, as a doctoral student, served as the Managing Editor of Sightings, the then twice-weekly online publication of the Martin Marty Center for the Public Understanding of Religion at the University of Chicago Divinity School. Her work analyzing the role of religion in current events has appeared in The Atlantic online, The Conversation US, Rel & Politics (now ARC: Religion, Politics, Et Cetera), The Globe Post, Al Jazeera English, Berkley Center for Religion, Peace & World Affairs, and elsewhere. Her articles have been anthologized, translated into French and Spanish, and reposted in publications like Salon, Asia Times, The Independent, Christianity Today, The Times of Israel, Religion News Service, etc. She has been cited in The Washington Post, The L.A. Times, The New Republic, and others.

During her years as Principal Investigator and Director of the Global Ethic Project for the Parliament of the World's Religions, an international interfaith organization, she was in charge of all things related to its foundational document, "Towards a Global Ethic"—a document unique in its attempt to express the basic ethical principles shared by the world's people, religious or not. It was initially drafted in 1993 by theologian Hans Küng in collaboration with hundreds of religious leaders and ethicists from many of the world's regions and religions. Renaud led a similarly collaborative effort in 2018 to expand the original document with language setting forth agreement on care for the Earth. It has since been endorsed by thousands.

Born in the United States, raised in France and then Missouri, she is a graduate of the Missouri Institute of Science and Technology where she received her B.S. in Chemistry and her M.S. in Computer Science. She is also a graduate of the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she earned an M.Div. and a PhD in religious studies and ethics.

Renaud lives in Chicago where she currently teaches healthcare ethics in the Department of Religious Studies at DePaul University. She continues to contribute to academic research and to write for the general public.
